The story so far…

Thursday 4/11/02

I'm at Seton Hall University for a Spring practice session with the soccer team (I'm the assistant coach). While playing I was involved in a high-impact head-to-head collision with another player – I was looking up at the ball and never saw it coming.

While it appeared to be just a nasty black eye, I went to an eye doctor as a precaution because my contact lens had ripped in my eye.  The doctor informed me that I had a detached retina – very serious – and would need surgery immediately.

I was taken to an eye surgeon for further tests and admitted to St. Barnabas Hospital for emergency surgery. A CATSCAN revealed a fractured skull under the eye socket – just to complicate matters.  On Thursday evening doctors Cohen and Kanter conducted a 2 hour and twenty minute operation to re-attach the retina in my right eye using a silicon buckle.

Friday 4/12/02

I check out of the hospital and visit Dr. Cohen. He is happy with the results so far.

Saturday & Sunday:

two days of resting on my back.  The eye is still swollen shut.  Eye drops every 3 hours. While holding my eye open for the drops I can see some things. I think this is a good thing!  Kelly is taking great care of me!!!

Monday 4/15/02

Today I visit Dr. Cohen again to check the progress.
